Birmingham mother fatally shot, set on fire was ‘kind, loving, and generous person,’ family says

Family members of a woman whose burning body was found in a wooded area last week are asking for help raising money for her burial.

The body of 31-year-old Jermiera Ivory Fowler, a mother of two, was discovered Thursday night, just hours after police announced said she had reported missing.

“Jermiera was a kind, loving, and generous person who touched the lives of so many people,’’ her family wrote in a GoFundMe. “She loved and adored her 2 children.”

Fowler’s burned body was discovered about 9 p.m. Thursday, June 1, in the 200 block of Sellers Road on the city’s east side. Police had responded to the location after receiving a report of a burning body.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service extinguished the flames and pronounced Fowler dead on the scene.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said medical examiners determined Fowler had sustained a gunshot wound.

Earlier Thursday, Birmingham police had issued a missing alert for Fowler, saying she had last been seen about 4 p.m. Wednesday in the 500 block of 41st Street North. She was driving a white Nissan Versa Note.

Police said Fowler had not been seen or heard from since she left home to reportedly meet someone to make a purchase from Facebook Marketplace.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald on Friday said investigators can’t confirm that Fowler was actually going to meet someone to make a purchase.

Fitzgerald on Tuesday said there are no new updates to report in the investigation.

Fowler is the second woman this year to be found slain with fire involved.

The body of Ariel Jones, 31, was discovered April 18. Officers responded to a field in the 8400 block of Fifth Avenue North in East Lake shortly before 8:30 a.m. that Tuesday after a citizen called 911 to report the abandoned vehicle.

Authorities said it appeared someone unsuccessfully tried to set a fire at the scene. No arrests have been announced.
